BM-100FX USB Powered Condenser Studio Recording Microphone Review
BM-100FX USB Powered Condenser Studio Recording Microphone Review
Today I tested out the Flour eon BM-100FX and it's ridiculous.
It’ll run you about $32 on amazon, and it's inbuilt effects. Once I say
built-in effects, I mean inbuilt EFFECT. One effect. Let’s check out this some
more.
What's within the Box?
This microphone came within the same box as just about every
other mass produced Chinese microphone that I even have purchased. Inside
you'll get the Microphone, Pop Filter, Mic Stand, Mic Clip, Microphone Cable,
& Specifications Sheet.
The mic stand feels rock bottom and that i don't think it'll
last very long, and therefore the mic clip can barely fit the microphone. If
you've got some extra cash after purchasing the microphone, i might definitely
recommend learning a special mic stand and shock mount.
Performance / Features
The frequency response on this mic is 30Hz - 20KHz which is
pretty like other microphones within the same price range.
The polar pattern is 180-degrees. Ahead of the mic you'll
get good sound and behind the microphone you'll only get low-mid frequencies
being picked up. This is often good if you're recording during a loud room or
if you're recording while you're typing on a keyboard. (Just confirm to put
anything you do not want to be heard, behind the microphone).
As I discussed the BM-100x also has an onboard effect
(echo). This enables you to feature a delay effect to your audio. No matter how
cool the thought is, I do not see any practical applications of this feature.
Lastly, the cable is XLR to three .5mm/USB. This enables you
to plug into your computers microphone input (which records the audio) and
therefore the USB port (which provides power to the microphone).
Pros
- The microphone cable has USB jack to supply power to microphone
- There is a microphone gain knob on the microphone
- 180-degree polar pattern (it doesn't devour noise all the way round the microphone)
Cons
- The cable is XLR to three .5mm/USB, this is often too specialized of a cable, and can make it difficult to exchange.
- The knobs on the microphone feel flimsy.
- The effect doesn't provide enough control
- It is just one effect that I do not think has any practical applications
- The microphone stand is reasonable / Mic Clip hardly fits microphone
- Slightly costlier than similar sounding microphones that don't have effect
Conclusion
Overall, I feel this mic falls short. It’s some cool
features that i feel are often applied to microphones within the future more successfully,
but they do not succeed here. The echo doesn't leave enough control to form it
a useful effect, the cable is just too specialized, and therefore the
accessories desire an afterthought. However, if you're interested, I even have
included a link to the microphone down below.
